Choosing The Right Wireless Internet Plan

Internet service has come a long way since the days of dial-up connections and one size fits all service plans. Most users today demand broadband access to take full advantage of what the Internet offers. You will likely be offered a choice between wireless broadband and mobile broadband plans. At first, it would seem as if the two are the same, but they are different.

A wireless Internet connection is simply one that doesn't require a physical connection for access. Some people already make use of wireless connections to some degree. They have a cable that brings the Internet into their home, but it connects to a router that shares the wireless connection. A desktop, laptop or even mobile phone can use an external or built-in wireless antenna to pick up the signal from the router to connect to the Internet. This is also the way things work when you make use of wireless Internet access in hotels, Internet cafes and other businesses that offer wireless Internet service. In some cases, the router in the home doesn't use a cable, but picks up another wireless signal from the service provider.

Mobile broadband is different in that the user connects to his or her Internet service using either the same wireless network cellular phones use or via a satellite connection. Whereas the typical wireless user will have to be within 6 to 9 meters (20 to 30 feet) of a router to receive the signal, a mobile user can access the Internet virtually anywhere. Mobile broadband is a good choice for frequent travelers or people who live in remote areas where traditional broadband connections are not available. Mobile broadband plans are often offered at various price levels based on usage and frequently bundled with home Internet and mobile phone plans so you can reduce costs.

TPG Internet offers both types of services to subscribers along with traditional broadband connections. The TPG plan you choose depends on the way you intend to use your Internet connection. If you own a single desktop computer, a home broadband connection will probably provide everything you need. With multiple Internet users in your household, you need a home wireless plan that allows simultaneous connections from desktops or laptops no matter where they’re located. If you’re the sole Internet user, but frequently away from home you should go with the mobile plan or add it to your home plan.
